Construction and Trades

Registration for continuing education classes is completed upon payment and can be done by mail or in-person at the South Campus (2201 S 78thSt, Tacoma 98409), Building A, Room A100. We accept cash, check, Visa and MasterCard.

Continuing Education classes are self-supported; therefore, Bates will cancel a class if there are too few participants enrolled to cover the cost of the class. If your withdrawal notification is given at least one business day prior to the first day of class, or the class is canceled, you will receive a 100 percent refund. Bates reserves the right to cancel, reschedule class times and/or dates, or change instructors. We will notify you only if the class is canceled.

Boiler Fireman/Operating Engineers

Boiler Operator Certification Testing
Class I Chief Operating Engineer, Class II & III Operating Engineer and Class IV and V Boiler Fireman
This certification is required to operate boilers in the City of Tacoma. Bates administers testing monthly (except in September) at the South Campus, 2201 S. 78th Street in Tacoma. For more information about the Boiler Certification Exam call 253.680.7402.

 

Operating Engineers Class I and II, STENG 232
Learn the knowledge and skills necessary for supervisory boiler plant operating engineer positions. Upon successful completion of class and required years of experience, students are eligible to take the Class I or II Operating Engineer Certification Exam, which is required to operate in the City of Tacoma, ordinance No. 26951. Text is approximately $110, not included. Students must attend each class and successfully pass a final exam to earn the Certificate of Completion for the course.

Learn the knowledge and skills necessary to operate low- and high-pressure steam and hot water boilers, learn safety procedures, and more. Upon successful completion of the class and the required year of experience for the Operating Engineers Class III and the 120 observation hours for the Boiler Fireman Class IV, students are eligible to take the certification exams, which are required to operate in the City of Tacoma, ordinance No. 26951. Text is approximately $250, not included. Students must attend each class and successfully pass a final exam to earn the Certificate of Completion for the course.

Electrical Trainee
This series of course may be used towards the 48 hours of basic trainee classes required for electrical trainee certificate renewal. Classes do not need to be taken consecutively.

This course will cover the standard for electricity safety in the workplace and basic electrical theory. At the completion of this course, students will be able to: identify electrical hazards; analyze DC circuits; and solve for voltage, current and resistance.
