Job Summary

The Student Library Assistant will provide basic service to patrons and staff at Bates Technical College Downtown Campus Library . The assistant will be responsible for basic organization and upkeep of library spaces and will assist library staff in monitoring and responding to patron needs. Assistant may perform basic circulation tasks upon staff approval, and perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions
  • Light cleaning and tidying
  • Re-shelving materials
  • Direct or escort library patrons to appropriate staff
  • Answer basic questions, or refer questions to staff
  • Guide patrons to locations of library resources
  • Answer incoming calls and take messages for staff
  • Monitoring library supplies and inventory
  • Other duties as assigned

Student Library Assistants will acquire practical customer service and library operations experience. Students will be trained in professional workplace ‘soft-skills’, basic computer technology, the Dewey Decimal system, and FERPA regulations (privacy).

Minimum Qualifications
  • Basic email and Microsoft Office experience
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
