College Academic and General Education

At Bates Tech, most degrees require the completion of 15 or more credits in college-level courses in Human Relations, Communications, and Math. Some programs may have additional requirements. These courses, offered at all three of our campuses and online, complement your industry-specific skills training and support all career and technical programs at the college.

General Education Program

Our general education program is designed to provide students with a well-rounded education that supports their chosen career paths. For the purposes of outcomes assessment, general education acts as a standalone program with its own student learning outcomes:

· Knowledge: Examine a broad selection of topics, concepts, and methods that promote academic, professional, and personal success.

· Reasoning: Apply critical thinking and logical and quantitative reasoning skills for the purpose of inquiry, innovation, analysis, and creative problem solving.

· Communication: Develop reading, writing, speaking, listening, and information literacy skills to be clearly understood and to collaborate effectively with others.

· Ethical Awareness: Explore core ethical values and cultural awareness in order to act responsibly in diverse academic, professional, community, and group settings.

Transferable Courses: Washington 45

Bates offers courses that are generally transferable to other colleges, including those under the Washington 45 agreement. These courses are open to any student, even if you do not intend to earn your degree at Bates. Bates also offers all the prerequisite courses you need to enter the practical nursing and occupational therapy assistant programs.

Year One Transfer Courses: Washington 45

A student who completes courses selected from within the general education categories listed below may be able to transfer and apply a maximum of 45 quarter credits toward general education requirements at any other public and most private higher education institutions in the state. For transfer purposes, a student must have a minimum grade of ‘C’ or better (2.0 or above) in each course completed from this list. Transferability is determined by the receiving college, and completion of these courses does not guarantee admission to another college.
