Partnership builds an early career pathway to help meet growing demand for behavioral health workers.

Responding to a growing need for behavioral health professionals, Bates Technical College and the Healthcare Training Fund will launch a Youth Behavioral Health Apprenticeship designed to build the next generation of the region’s behavioral health workforce. Beginning fall 2026, the partnership will give high school students ages 16 to 20 an early pathway into the field through college coursework, hands-on training and real-world work experience while they complete their high school education.

“Behavioral health employers need a strong, sustainable pipeline of skilled workers, and this apprenticeship allows us to begin building that pipeline while students are still in high school,” said Dr. Johnny Hu, vice president of instruction at Bates Technical College. “Combining college education with hands-on work experience will help prepare students for meaningful careers while helping employers meet a critical workforce need in our region.”

During the approximately yearlong program, students will complete college coursework and 2,000 hours of work-based learning. Courses will be offered primarily online, with some in-person instruction, giving students flexibility while they gain career-ready skills.

As part of the apprenticeship, students will complete nursing assistant-certified training and prepare for the Washington state certified nursing assistant exam. Upon successful completion, students will earn a high school diploma and an Associate of Applied Science degree in Community Services and Public Safety.

The apprenticeship prepares students for careers as behavioral health technicians, who support and help maintain safe, supportive environments for individuals experiencing mental health and substance use challenges. They may work in clinics, treatment centers, hospitals and other behavioral health settings, supporting patients throughout treatment and recovery.

For students interested in mental health, health care or other helping professions, the apprenticeship provides a direct pathway from high school to college and employment. Students will receive support from Bates Tech and the Healthcare Training Fund throughout their education, training and work experience.

The new apprenticeship expands an established partnership between Bates Tech and the Healthcare Training Fund, which also includes programs in Medical Assistant and Substance Use Disorder Professional programs. Together, these programs introduce students to in-demand careers while creating entry points into the health care workforce.
